Steve Grice
Steve originally from High Crompton and moved to Saddleworth at a very young age which meant he could have been lost to Cricket or Rugby League, Steve played cricket for Greenfield in an Under 16s team at 11 years old and also played for the Hulme Grammar School team. There weren’t many junior football teams when Steve was young so he only played for school.
Steve joined Springhead FC as a 15 year old striker but when a goalie didn’t turn up for a game Steve went in goals and that turned to a 20 year association. At 18 he was asked to play for a very good Newroyd team on Sundays in the Ashton League which became playing 3 games a weekend, 2 at a high standard as goalie and 1 as an outfield player in the Oldham Sunday League.
A lot of the Springhead lads played for the Saturday & Sunday teams, the Sunday team being the Red Lion and at 23 Steve started his Managing/ Coaching career with different teams which to date is at 35 years. Until 1999 it had been at Open Age Level.
One of his neighbours was a female England Youth International and Steve’s great aunt had played for the famous Dick Kerr’s ladies in WWI and in the early 1920’s as a goalkeeper. This meant when Oldham Council were looking to start a girls youth league, Steve got involved in the starting of the Oldham Girls League now the North Manchester Girls League and has been on the committee since 2000, as Treasurer and Vice Chair.
Steve has worked long hours on the development of the female game and through his role of club chair for 16 years at Heyside Angels and now chair of Crompton FC he has seen massive strides in the game. Steve has run several teams which have been successful with the emphasis on entertaining football. He has also been Chair of Voluntary Sport Oldham and supports Manchester FA in his role as a council member.
A Liverpool FC & St. Helens RLFC fan due to family roots , Steve just loves to watch a lot of Sports and feels that volunteers are lifeblood that makes sure sport can survive.
The highlight of volunteering was to be 2012 Olympic Volunteer at Old Trafford as the player arrival at the ground, and he escorted the worlds most expensive player Neymar, into the stadium along with Sandro, Marcelo, Chris Wood, Suarez and Alba
Crompton FC is a new venture for everyone involved but there is an experienced dedicated group which means Steve can see a bright future for the club and he might even get to 50 years of volunteering with this outlook.
